March 11, 2011 was the day that the massive 9.0 magnitude Tohoku earthquake hit the eastern coast of northern Japan. It was the most powerful earthquake in Japan in modern day record keeping and triggered an enormously destructive series of events. Waves up to 130ft. travelled inland, nearly erasing several small towns and significantly damaging the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Close to 20,000 people have passed away or are still missing. This crisis left tens of thousands of people without homes and separated from their families.
In this project, I am painting and drawing photos that I have found on the Internet of photographs found in the rubble that was left behind by the tsunami. I want to create memory from these photographs that has been orphaned or forgotten and pay tribute to them.
